Saturday, March 24—Transyl vania county schools in iMrion. • ; • to Pauftnhn Schedule Given Pre-School Clinics To Begin, Importance Cited Beginners’ Days and pre-school clinics will begin in Transylvania county on Tuesday March 27th. The first will be held at the Pisgah Forest school, and the schedule for the others is as fol lows: April 3rd - Rosenwald April 10th - T. C. Henderson May 1st - Brevard Elementary May 8th - Rosiman Elementary May 15th - Straus School May 22nd - Penrose School The Beginners’ Days ana pre school clinics will begin promp tly at 9:00 a.m. on the above days, and parents are urged to accompany their children to the schools. “In order for the schools in Transylvania county to do a bet ter job for your child, it is ab solutely necessary for all parents of pre-school children to do the following things,” Supt. Wayne Bradburn said. “1. That each parent fill out an enrollment blank and return to the school immediately. “2. That you and your child at tend the pre-school clinic on Be ginners’ Day. “3. That if possible your child have a physical examination by his or her family physician be fore the scheduled Beginners’ Day.” Mr. Bradburn continued by saying: “It is of the utmost importance that your ohild or children be —Turn to Page Twelve High School Students Are Now Taking Road-E-O Exams High school students from Bre vard and Rosman high schools are talcing written tests this week as one part of the teen age Road E-0 that is being sponsored by the Brevard Jaycees. According to Road-E-O chair man Tom McCrary, the top 25 scores in the written test will be eligible to compete in the actual driving competition, which will be held on Saturday, April 14th. Mary Tinsley Hamlin, will celebrate her 103rd birthday on March 28th. Active in spite of her years, Mrs. Hamlin usually prepares two of her meals each day, does her own laundry and stays busy braiding rugs, quilt ing and sewing. Until she broke her hip nine years ago, she took care of her yard and garden, did her shop ping and was independent. Now she gets some assistance from her two children, Mrs. John Ashworth, who lives on Maple street, and Mrs. Marcus Miller, of Prinston, West Virginia, who spends several months each year with her mother. “Granny” Hamlin was born in 1859 in a section of Hender son county that is now Tran sylvania, the daughter of the late Samuel and Elsie Nichol son Tinsley. In 1880, she mar ried Augustus Hamlin, and 15 years later she was left a wid ow with six small children. A member of the First Bap tist church, Mrs. Hamlin was active in Sunday school and —Turn To Page Seven GOP Planning Lincoln Day Dinner, 31st The Brevard Republicans are preparing for the annual Lincoln Day Dinner, which is to be held Saturday evening, March 31, 7:30 p.m., in the Masonic Temple. The meal is to be prepared and served by members of the Order of the Eastern Star. Hugh Monteith, prominent at torney of Sylva, is to be the guest speaker. Tickets are being sold by many Republican leaders throughout the county. They may also be ob tained from Jones news stand in Brevard and from Powell’s sup er market in" Rosman. Grogan, plant mana ger of the Du Pont silicon plant, has been named on the State Emergency Resource Planning committee by Governor Terry Sanford. Mr. Grogan has been asked to serve in the field of production on this important committee. The local industrialist has ac cepted and says that he is hon ored to be asked to be of service to the state of North Carolina should an emergency arise. In part, Governor Sanford wrote to Mr. Grogan: “In the event of a national emergency caused by enemy at tack the survival of the national economy and our way of life would be greatly imperiled. Plans Outlined For ’62 Rural Development Contest Transylvania Election Board Is Appointed The Transylvania Board of Elections was appointed in Ra leigh by the State Board of Elec tions along with those in the 3'ther 99 counties of North Caro lina. Ralph Lyday and George Per kins, Sr., were the Democrats ap pointed to the local board, while Lloyd Burhans is the Republi can member. The board is expected to meet on Saturday, March 24th, and elect a chairman and a secre tary. The annual planning meeting j of the Community Developmen' Clubs was held Monday night at Gaither’s Rhododendron room, I when plans were made for the j county’s program for the coming ! year. The main prize list will be the same as last year with $150 going to the community making the most progress in the farm divi sion and the non-farm division. In addition to the 14 induce ment prizes in the previous con tests, an additional prize of $30 for first place and $15 for second place is to be given for the best community youth program. This is the first year that this prize has been given. The district contest adopted the youth prize two years ago. Ohio State WPNF will broadcast Friday night’s semi-final NCAA basket ball contest between the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Ohio State’s Buckeyes. Should Wake Forest win this semi-final game, the local station will carry the Saturday night finals between the Deacons and the winner of the Friday night Cincinnati - UCLA contest. In the event of a loss for Wake Forest Friday night, the game Saturday would be between the Deacons and the defeated team i 'iL'OiShr; in the other semi-final tilt. Today that idea is a reality During these four months 2-1 men who are dedicated ts> serving the county through & have spent count ies ‘iurs in training for this exactuig service and in gather ing together equipment and supplies necessary for their services. They have met in three-huur sessions one night each week undergoing training in find aid and rescue procedures. On Tuesday night of this weds, 21 of them received then- cer tificates. Through the local civil de fense chapter, they obtained * state body truck and a 30 KV light generator. Later they am cured a first aid truck. The men have worked non than 500 hours sanding, parad ing and readying equipment for action. They collect weet%F dues to pay for materials need ed for this repair work. They —Turn to Page SI*.
